I feel like this might be more a correlation than a causation. There is less of a stigma attached to online dating than before, and now more and more people are using it.
The article brings some good points, but frankly its pretty fluffy compared to most of the other articles in the economist. The graph they provide is pretty sketchy, since it doesn't provide any long-term pre-financial crisis numbers with which to compare the current growth in online dating.
